Cord-based Reflexes

The anatomy and physiology of the reflexes that govern movement

The Myotatic Reflex

Length: 15 minutesAuthor: Simon KingComplexity: Easy

The myotatic reflex is not really a reflex at all. We think of reflexes as reactions to a distinct input, whereas muscle spindles provide continuous input to the CNS, one that changes in response to changing external conditions and forces. It is this variable input that allows for unconscious control over voluntary muscle and maintenance of optimal muscle tone.
